What is National Payroll Week?
Every paycheck creates possibility. It can pay the rent, put groceries on the table, build savings, or bring someone one step closer to a financial goal. And behind every paycheck are payroll professionals working to make sure people get paid accurately and on time.
National Payroll Week (NPW) is an annual celebration of those professionals and the important work they do. It’s an opportunity to recognize payroll teams, help employees better understand their pay, and shine a spotlight on a function that keeps organizations and their people moving forward.
What week is National Payroll Week?
National Payroll Week 2026 takes place between September 7-11 and is the perfect opportunity to refocus on your payroll strategies.
When did National Payroll Week Start?
The American Payroll Association began National Payroll Week in the United States back in the fall of 1996. This year marks the 30th anniversary of National Payroll Week, with the theme “Every Paycheck Creates Possibility.”
What is Global Payroll Week?
Not to be confused with National Payroll Week, Global Payroll Week takes place earlier in the year during the month of May. While each country celebrates their domestic payroll professionals during NPW, the Global Payroll Management Institute began Global Payroll Week for payroll leaders around the world to consider multi-country and global payroll topics and issues.
Why National Payroll Week is important
Getting payroll right has always mattered. But the work behind every paycheck is becoming increasingly complex.
Payroll professionals are navigating changing regulations, increasingly complex workforces, growing volumes of data, and rising expectations from employees and business leaders. Yet much of that complexity can be invisible when everything goes right.
Employees see their pay arrive. Behind it are payroll professionals managing time and attendance data, deductions, taxes, compliance requirements, exceptions, corrections, and countless calculations to help make sure people are paid accurately and on time.
National Payroll Week is an opportunity to make that work visible. It’s a time to recognize the people behind the paycheck, educate employees about payroll and their pay, and consider how organizations can better support the teams responsible for one of their most important commitments to their people.
Here are five ways your organization can celebrate National Payroll Week.
Five ways to celebrate National Payroll Week
1. Put your payroll professionals in the spotlight
Start by helping your organization understand what National Payroll Week is and, more importantly, what your payroll team makes possible.
Use internal communications, employee newsletters, collaboration tools, or company meetings to introduce the people behind payroll and highlight the work they do. Consider sharing interesting facts about your payroll operation, recognizing important accomplishments, or asking payroll professionals to share what people might be surprised to learn about their jobs.
Making the work behind every paycheck more visible can help payroll professionals feel seen and appreciated by colleagues and leaders across the organization.
2. Make recognition personal
Whether you go all out with posters and balloons or show recognition through small gestures, these actions can make your payroll team feel appreciated. Here are a few examples from past Dayforce NPW celebrations to help plan your own:
- Send out personalized thank you notes from the leadership team
- Bring people together with food – organize an in-person or virtual breakfast/lunch
- Share interesting facts about your payroll department or fun photos so people get to know the faces behind their paychecks. Posting information on your company intranet or in your employee newsletter is a great way to reach your whole workforce and spread the message
Recognition doesn’t have to look the same for everyone. Leaders can recognize both team-wide accomplishments and individual contributions, taking the time to acknowledge the specific expertise, effort, and impact each payroll professional brings to the organization.
3. Invest in your payroll professionals
Recognition can go beyond gifts and celebrations. National Payroll Week is also an opportunity to invest in the people who keep payroll moving.
Consider supporting professional development through training, certifications, industry events, mentoring, or dedicated time for learning. As payroll becomes increasingly complex, helping professionals build their skills can benefit both employees and the organization.
And, of course, a thoughtful gift, team lunch, or other gesture of appreciation can still be a great way to say thank you.
4. Help employees better understand their pay
National Payroll Week is a natural opportunity to help employees better understand their pay and the work that goes into delivering it.
Create opportunities for employees to ask payroll professionals questions, whether through a team collaboration tool, Q&A session, webinar, or other educational event. Payroll teams can help employees better understand earnings statements, deductions, taxes, benefits, and other elements of their paycheck.
Organizations can also help employees take greater control of their finances by providing tools that make it easier to access and understand their pay. For example, on-demand pay can give employees greater flexibility by allowing them to access their earned pay before their traditional payday.
Helping employees become more informed about their pay can also help them identify questions or potential issues earlier, while reinforcing the important role payroll professionals play throughout the employee experience.

5. Give payroll teams technology worthy of the work they do
Recognizing payroll professionals also means giving them the tools they need to succeed.
When payroll teams have to move between disconnected systems, reconcile different sources of data, or rely on manual processes, valuable time can be spent finding and correcting issues. Bringing payroll, time, workforce management, and HR together in a single system with shared data and rules can help reduce that administrative burden.
Technology that continuously calculates payroll can also help teams identify and resolve issues throughout the pay cycle instead of waiting until the end of the pay period. With greater visibility into payroll data, teams can spend less time chasing discrepancies and more time focusing on higher-value work.
AI is creating additional opportunities to support payroll professionals by helping surface anomalies, answer questions, and streamline repetitive tasks. The goal isn’t to diminish the expertise of payroll professionals. It’s to give them better tools to apply that expertise.
Payroll will always be complex. The technology supporting it shouldn’t add unnecessary complexity.
Celebrating payroll means supporting payroll
National Payroll Week is a chance to say thank you to the professionals behind every paycheck. But supporting payroll teams shouldn’t end when the week does.
As regulations, workforce models, and employee expectations continue to evolve, payroll professionals will remain responsible for one of an organization’s most fundamental commitments: paying people accurately and on time.
Organizations can show their appreciation by recognizing that expertise, investing in payroll professionals’ development, and removing unnecessary complexity from the work they do.
Every paycheck creates possibility. This National Payroll Week, celebrate the people who make those possibilities possible.
