Making a difference: Dayforce gives back with annual Global Volunteer Month

Giving back has long been a cornerstone of Dayforce’s culture, and it’s why we devote each April to highlight volunteering. So, what do our employees do during Global Volunteer Month and what does it mean to them? Hear about it from five new(ish) Daymakers.

At Dayforce, we have always believed in “giving where we’re living.” And while supporting our communities is an important part of our culture year-round, we take it to the next level every April with Global Volunteer Month.

By shining a 30-day spotlight on making a difference around the world, Global Volunteer Month encourages our employees – our Daymakers – to take a break from work to engage with the causes that matter most to them.

At Dayforce, we know that flexibility and a personalized experience make work life better and are key parts of our culture, and we’ve extended that to Global Volunteer Month. Daymakers chose from in-person or virtual volunteering opportunities, with a group or solo. They could also participate in Dayforce-organized activities or create their own community-focused experiences.

And it was a resounding success! We had 67% more employees participate in this year's Global Volunteer Month compared to last year, contributing double the number of volunteer hours year over year. Daymakers across five continents clocked over 10,000 hours in April alone – the same as over the full year of 2023.

So, what exactly do employees do during their volunteer hours? And how do they feel about their experiences? Get ready to be inspired by these stories from Daymakers around the globe.

Phil Glennie, Senior Content Marketing Manager
London, Ontario, Canada

What Global Volunteer Month activity or activities did you participate in?
I volunteered with an organization called Shelter Movers, which provides moving services and support to clients fleeing gender-based violence. I attended a two-hour training in trauma-informed client service and next will participate in a full day of moving work.

What impact did the experience have on you, your community, and the world?
The overwhelm and danger of fleeing gender-based violence keep many people locked in a cycle of abuse that harms individuals, communities, and the entire world. By helping survivors move into safe new homes, Shelter Movers performs essential, and in many cases, life-saving support.

How did Global Volunteer Month make your work life better?
I've never worked for a company that promotes volunteering so strongly. I've always thought about volunteering more but am constrained by being the father of a toddler and other responsibilities away from work. Being able to pursue volunteer work through dedicated volunteer hours has removed a significant barrier for me, and now that I've taken my first step, I can feel myself becoming more committed to volunteering and helping my community on an ongoing basis.

Kiran Chaggar, Community Impact Manager
London, United Kingdom

What Global Volunteer Month activity or activities did you participate in?
Along with some of my Dayforce colleagues in the UK, I participated in Paddle and Pick on the River Thames to help remove trash from one of our local waterways.

What impact did the experience have on you, your community, and the world?
With the increased awareness of plastic waste in the waterways and the impact it has on marine life, it felt great to be able to help make a difference. Through this effort, we were able to help keep the iconic London landmark, the River Thames, clean for the thousands of people who visit the city to appreciate and enjoy.

How did Global Volunteer Month make your work life better?
Global Volunteer Month encouraged me to get out in my local community and give back. It was also a fantastic opportunity to meet and connect with fellow Daymakers I would otherwise not have met. I’m so grateful to work for a company like Dayforce that encourages employees to make an impact in the world.

Maddie Mullins, Tax Professional Senior
Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States

What Global Volunteer Month activity or activities did you participate in?
I was lucky enough to participate in two activities during Global Volunteer Month. First, the tax leadership team went to Feed My Starving Children in Eagan, Minnesota. In partnership with other groups of volunteers, we packed 100 boxes of food containing 21,600 meals. And the Minneapolis Dayforce office hosted an event to pack birthday kits for children and young adults, which I was happy to participate in.

What impact did the experience have on you, your community, and the world?
Participating in Global Volunteer Month had such a positive impact on me. It was incredible to see the final numbers at the end of our time at Feed My Starving Children and see the impact our work had. I truly felt like we made a difference, knowing the work we did will help people in need around the world.

How did Global Volunteer Month make your work life better?
It's one thing to have a company encourage you to volunteer for a cause, but to see an entire global organization rally around Global Volunteer Month was just incredible. I'm proud to work for an organization that highlights the importance of volunteering on such a large scale. I'm so happy to work for Dayforce, and when you're happy and proud of the company you work for, it truly makes work life better.

Carol Osorio, VP of Services and Philippines Country Leader
Manilla, Philippines

What Global Volunteer Month activity or activities did you participate in?
I had the pleasure of participating in three activities during Global Volunteer Month. I donated blood through the Philippine Red Cross, a humanitarian organization dedicated to ensuring the country has an adequate and safe blood supply. I also participated in a Food Sharing Outreach Program in cooperation with Rise Above Foundation Cebu. And in our Manila office, we hosted a donation drive where we packed feminine hygiene kits and sorted bras for women in need.

What impact did the experience have on you, your community, and the world?
I always believe that together we can change the world. The experience made me feel fulfilled knowing that I am making a positive impact in the lives of other people. For me, one true essence of Global Volunteer Month is the feeling of mutual gratitude. As I reflect on these events, I am equally thankful that I received the gift to feel that sense of purpose and compassion. Our volunteer events not only helped our community by providing a lifeline to those facing difficulties but also strengthened community resilience. And as we tell the world about our experiences, we create a ripple effect of positivity that touches the hearts of many people.

How did Global Volunteer Month make your work life better?
I am deeply engaged knowing that I am part of an organization that consistently supports social responsibility through volunteer events, and I am surrounded by colleagues who value the impact of community work. It reinforces my feeling that I belong to something bigger. Dayforce has given me the opportunity to not only thrive and make an impact within the bounds of my work, but also empowers me to contribute meaningfully to the bigger world.

What Global Volunteer Month activity or activities did you participate in?
For Global Volunteer Month, my colleagues and I helped clean the banks of the Suzhou River.

What impact did the experience have on you, your community, and the world?
Through this experience, I learned a lot about the history of the Suzhou River and it helped me understand the importance of protecting the environment and why participating in volunteer activities through Dayforce is so impactful.

How did Global Volunteer Month make your work life better?
It was an uplifting experience, and I discovered the beauty of the environment near where I work.

Global Volunteer Month may have come to a close, but the impact our Daymakers have made around the world will resonate for much longer. Our commitment to our brand promise to make work life better includes offering our employees meaningful experiences beyond their daily work. We are a company made up of passionate “doers,” committed to making a difference for our customers and communities. This is a year-round pursuit for us, and Global Volunteer Month is a shining example of how we translate those values into action.
